SORTING

Sorting the table can be helpful for certain purposes. Clicking on any column header will sort the table rows on that column in ascending order; blanks cells are sorted in last position. Clicking again on the same header will change the sort order to descending; a small arrow appears in the header to indicate the current sort order. Clicking on further columns will re-sort the table, maintaining the order of the previously sorted items as subsets within the new sort order.

For instance, to order the items by composer, and within that order by process, and within that order by date, click first the header for date, then process, and finally composer.

The table has been sorted initially first by process: acoustic/electric processes combined, then rolls, then film; within that order, it is sorted by composer, work, and date. To return to the initial order, click the browser's refresh button.

COLUMNS

IDENTIFICATION:

Composer:

Work: The key is included; it is relevant in determining the speed of playback in relation to the pitch, given the original tuning. Capital letters indicate major keys, lower-case letters minor.

Date: The date of recording is intended, rather than the date of issue. In the case of some of the rolls I have not so far been able to distinguish these two kinds of dates with certainty.

Place: Camden = Camden, New Jersey, USA; Hayes = Hayes, Middlesex, England (using his own Baldwin piano); London = London, England. Leipzig and Freiburg were both involved in the production of the early Welte rolls; it appears that Pachmann played for them in Leipzig.

Process: Recording process (Acoustic, Electric, [Reproducing] Roll, Film).

Matrix: A matrix number identifies one side, typically of a 78 rpm recording. The prefix Bb = 10", Cc = 12"; the first letter indicates the size, the second the country. An A prefix indicates an American matrix; as A numbers add no essential information, they are omitted here. When a matrix number ends with a hyphen followed by a number, the latter number indicates the take in the given session.

Also: Other works played in combination within this matrix/take.

Panigel 1949: Entry in L'oeuvre de Frédéric Chopin: discographie générale réalisée sous la direction de Armand Panigel. Paris: Editions de la revue disques, 1949. Panigel gives the date as: "date (de gravure quand on a pu la déterminer, ou de premiè édition)" (p.19) [date of cutting when that can be determined, or of the first release]; his dates are not shown here.

Methuen 1984: Entry in James Methuen-Campbell, Catalog of Recordings by Classical Pianists, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, Disco Epsom, 1984.

Comments: One type of comment has the purpose of describing a performance sufficiently to distinguish it from other recordings by Pachmann of the same work. Occasional small blemishes in the playing are mentioned, not to belittle the artist, but because they assist in distinguishing versions. The descriptions usually refer to the score (Paderewski edition). The question of which editions Pachmann used is not investigated here. Another type of comment refers to further releases of the item.

Eval: Brief evaluations. It may seem impertinent to include these; they are supplied because some have asked for a guide to Pachmann's rather variable output. The evaluations are tentative and subject to revision. They refer to Pachmann's playing, not to the recorded sound quality. Whereas an essay could be written about any one recording, I have allowed myself here only a few words. A number from 000 to 100 has been assigned to each item to enable sorting. The evaluations are based only on my own response; other listeners may of course respond differently. Many points of view arise, involving the significance of the composition, the value of the recording as a historical document, the technical level of the playing, the expressive level of the playing, comparison with other performers, and so on. A single number can never properly indicate the value of a recording; for instance, a recording that may be evaluated on the whole less favourably may nevertheless contain exquisite moments. Further, the immense number of comparisons that could be made between pieces and versions is clearly impossible to handle with full consistency. Comparison between rolls and 78s raises special difficulties including problems of playback quality; I have tried to let the evaluations reflect Pachmann's playing, so far as I can infer it, and not the properties of the recording or playback mechanisms. Ideally, perhaps, the evaluator should be thoroughly familiar with the score and any alternate versions of the score. In the many cases when Pachmann recorded a work more than once the various performances should be compared directly, but this has not so far (November 2001) been carried out.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:

Timings can only be approximate. For CDs, the timing printed in the CD's documentation sometimes does not match that indicated by a playback device; in such cases both timings are given here, the documented timing first. For CDs the timing includes any silence on the track before and after the playing. For LPs and tapes an attempt has been made to give a timing for the sounding material. Future work may include timing the recordings from the start of the first note to the start of the last note, the most reliable method. Timings are informative only to the extent that playback speed is correct, both in transferring the material and in final re-playing; this may be tested to a limited extent via pitch. On rolls the tempo is indicated in feet per ten minutes; this leaves no doubt of the tempo, provided the recording apparatus was correctly calibrated.
Pitch used at the time of the original recording is a matter for research. The pitch of the transferred version is occasionally indicated here as {+ or - xt}, meaning higher or lower than A440 by x tones.
Tracks are shown as B3 for track 3 of side B; when a track contains two items these are shown as B3a, B3b.
The sign Θ indicates that the versions having the sign have been listened to in full by myself, compared against the named work, against one another, and against other versions, to confirm their identity. Descriptions intended to help in distinguishing between versions have been entered in the Comments column when appropriate. Those without the sign remain to undergo this process.

78s:

Countries are indicated in some cases. These may indicate where a recording was published or where it was distributed, some being shown in the Panigel (1949) and Methuen-Campbell (1984) discographies. Abbreviations used are: Arg(entina), Bel(gium), Eng(land), Fr(ance), Ger(many), Hol(land), Jap(an), Por(tugal), Sp(ain), Swe(den), Swi(tzerland, Tur(key), US = United States of America, OZ = Australia; also Poland and Russia.

TAPE:

Gust: Gustafson Piano Library open reel tapes. The two tapes are numbered 113, 114. The numbers are shown as 113/15 for item 15 on tape 113 etc. The tapes were originally distributed by Bishop's University, Lennoxville, Quebec, Canada; they are currently based at the Recorded Sound and Video Collection, Music Division, National Library of Canada, 395 Wellington St. Ottawa, ON K1A 0N4, Canada. (Some of the transfers are very noisy, but this was for many years the only easily accessible source for some of the recordings.)
DC: Privately made transfers of rolls to cassette tape kindly made for me by Denis Condon.

ROWS

The initial order of the rows is: first non-rolls, then rolls, each alphabetically by composer, work and date. See also "Sorting".

CELLS

Some cells are linked to a sound file which can, however, presently be played only on my own computer. Subject to copyright considerations, I might make some of the sound files available in the future.

COLOURS

Colour-coding in column 2 helps to match two or more recordings of the same work.
Colour-coding in column 6 helps to match two or more recordings belonging to the same matrix number.

SUMMARY

Sorting the table in various ways gives the following results. These results could perhaps be confirmed from other sources; they serve as a partial check of the consistency of the present discography, and may help to indentify misprints in the sources and to guard against misprints in the discography, but consistency cannot by itself guarantee correctness. When corrections are later made to the discography these summary results may need to be updated too.

RATIONALE

My reasons for attempting this work were: (i) in connection with my research into his playing, I needed a discography / rollography of de Pachmann, as complete and reliable as could be managed and covering all media, and with an indication of how to distinguish between different versions; and (ii) none satisfying those requirements seemed to be available.

I had never attempted a discography before, and lacked basic reference materials and much relevant knowledge. I have not collected many 78s and have only about half of the rolls, but I do have most of the LPs and CDs listed. I have therefore relied on piecing information together from wherever it arose, and on the help of friends (see the acknowledgements). I am releasing it on the Internet in the hope that (a) it might be helpful to others, and (b) others might help to correct errors and provide additional information. I hope to add some sound examples in due course.

It soon became apparent that the information provided in various sources was quite often contradictory or demonstrably erroneous (see under Errors). The only dependable resource therefore appeared to be my own hearing of the recordings referred to.

ERRORS

Errors in earlier sources:
I had considered listing all errors found in earlier sources, but it turned out that there are too many for this to be practicable. Here are some of them:

(1) The most extreme case is seen in the 78 G&T 5566 which is labelled Chopin 'Octave' Etude but which is actually the 'Butterfly' Etude op.25/09. This error is propagated in the LP Pearl GEM 103 on both the cover and the label. It is further propagated in the book by Methuen-Campbell (1981) p.250, which cites the Etude as "B minor op.25 No. 10" and which gives the matrix number wrongly as 3566. However, Methuen-Campbell (1984, p.42) corrects both the title and the matrix number. Panigel (p.078, p.082) wrongly includes it not as op.25/09 but as both op.25/07 (1912) and op.25/10 (1903).

(2) Another faulty identification is seen in the Welte roll listed as "Improvisation - En forme de Gondole" by Pachmann, whereas it is actually Henselt's "La Gondola (Etude) (Thema) op.13/2 in Gb" arranged (and not essentially altered) by Pachmann.

(3) The Artecho 3117 roll is labelled Chopin Prelude op.28/03 but is actually op.28/23.

(4) OPAL CD 9840: Although the track list engraved on the CD itself is correct, the track list printed in the booklet and on the back cover are very much in error:
Printed:1a1b2a2b&3456789 10&111312151416171819
Sounded:1 2 3 4 567891011 1213141516171819
Thus only the last 4 of the 19 tracks are numbered correctly. Other printing errors: Columbia L1009 1917 -> 1915; Mazurka op.25/4 -> 24/4; Columbia L112 -> L1112.

(5) Past Perfect track listing on CD, booklet & back cover are very wrong; here are the Chopin opus numbers for each track:
Track: 7 8 9 10 11 12 13
Printed:28/1528/2328/24 33/350/267/4 33/4
Sounded:36 28/1528/22 & 28/2324/467/450/233/4

(6) Dante 1 track 16 has printed op.33/1 instead of op.35/1 and for track 17 op.63/1 instead of op.63/3; Dante volume 2 track 7 has printed op.28/3 in G instead of op.28/23 in F.

(7) Innumerable smaller errors, possibly of proof-reading, also appear in many sources, including wrong track numbers, wrong keys of pieces, wrong matrix numbers and wrong dates.

Errors in this discography:
Many errors, gaps and question marks remain in the present discography. Some inconsistencies have been retained deliberately (e.g. some 78s were said in one source to have been recorded in December and in another source to have been released in November of the same year; as I do not know what error may be present I have retained both until further evidence becomes available). The help of readers in eliminating errors will be greatly appreciated; for this purpose or to make other comments, please contact the author (via the home page).
